IN THE 1990S, EACH CANADIAN THREW AWAY ABOUT ONE TONNE OF WASTE MATERIALS EVERY YEAR!
In 1990, about 459,000 tones of materials were recycled in Canada. Landfill sites account for about 38% of Canada's total
methane emissions. Methane is 20 times more potent as a greenhouse gas that carbon dioxide. 17 million Canadians (nearly 2/3
of us) have access to recycling.
Recycling also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions that affect global climate. In 1996, recycling of solid waste in
the United States prevented the release of 33 million tons of carbon into the air roughly the amount emitted annually by 25
million cars.
